i’ve discovered a cruel and unusual punishment for those of us who have no sense of decorating style, and fear copious amounts of the color pink: creating your own baby registry at t.arg.et. clearly, i have chosen the lesser of two evil empires, but holy shitballs. my head is spinning just trying to even come up with ideas for things we’ll probably/possibly/maybe need once sparky arrives.
can’t i just get some plain white burping cloths? why do i have to have mod circles? why must the layette essentials be so unequivocally carnation pink and powder blue and pee stain yellow?
i am having severe registry anxiety today. i think i will go eat some extra spicy thai food.
I did a post a while back about registering and what we ended up getting for the newborn phase. It is overwhelming and almost ridiculous- after spending too long in any baby section you start thinking that maybe you DO need that totally unnecessary baby item.
And for burp cloths: get a 12-pack of Gerber cotton diapers. We got ours from Target and they are the best burp cloths ever- I returned any fancy ones we received for store credit. They’re absorbant, big (I spread it over my whole shoulder and arm when I’m dressed for school in the morning and feeding Landon), and if one gets really messy you can always just toss it or use it as a cleaning rag.
Good luck!
I know exactly what you mean. Makes you almost want your own personal baby shopper to pick out all the ridiculous intricacies of babyware. Good luck!
I’m not even pregnant yet and the baby super store totally overwhelms me!
And I had some spicy thai food for lunch too!
Hey there. I don’t have that lawyer information anymore. My computer crashed on Wednesday and I lost EVERYTHING, including all my Favorites where that information was. I’m sorry 😦
A and I did a pretty good job of avoiding pinks and blues – sure we have lots of greens and yellows, but i like those colors much better. honestly, one of the reasons we didn’t find out the sex was to avoid people buying pink/blues. of course now that we have a boy and he has two boy cousins very close in age…he’s getting all the hand me downs. and you won’t see me complaining about free baby clothes/gear.
good luck!
It’s just in case you get confused in the middle of the night when you are suffering from severe sleep deprevation…boy, or girl…pink…what is that for…oh, girl….
I tagged you on babycakes.
I have a list of stuff for baby if you want it, email me. sacha at drizzle dot com.
I was surprised at how little we actually used most of the stuff we thought we needed. And I agree with LL, cloth diapers are awesome burping cloths!
testing
i have been trying to leave a comment but your blog hates me. I am looking for your email but in the meantime you can email me please? familyo at earthlink dot net
here is lo’s helpful comment.
1) You didn’t say whether you were registering in the store or online; I would avoid the actual store. It is likely to be overwhelming, and furthermore, there’s usually a wider variety online.
2) There are sites where you can register for items available at a variety of stores, enabling you to cherry-pick good stuff (for example you could even solicit advice from the wise internets). two such sites are http://www.findgift.com and http://www.myregistry.com
As E mentioned, the “gender neutral” stuff is all green and yellow (and I would add, only available in sizes 0-3, since once the kid is born you should be capable of assigning it carnation pink or powder blue). Co has fallen in love with the “duck” (sometimes “chick”) motif; you too might find that an endearing way to deal with yellow.
[We got hand-me-downs, coincidentally, all from people with boys, some of whom hadn’t found out before birth, so we have all “gender neutral” and boy clothes (of course our baby gifts scream Boy). We got a lot of the hand me downs before we knew Flipper was a boy and would definitely have put a girl in it.
I will say that I think I may find boy clothes less objectionable than some of the girl stuff I’ve seen….sure, I still sometimes eat my heart out over little dresses and hope we can go there someday. But, my point here is, you might want to look at boy clothes. The colors are brighter and the themes are less objectionable (all girl stuff seems to be about princesses and shopping, while boy stuff is often about animals and digging and trains).
That’s enough outta me. 🙂
